Project: Modelling interactions between respiratory viruses and immune responses

What were you doing before you joined the MRC DTP scheme?

I was working for a large software company.

Why did you choose your primary institution (LSHTM or SGUL)?

I previously did my masters at LSHTM so was familiar with the school, and the group that my project is based in is very active and sociable. In addition LSHTM is a great location!

What do you enjoy most about your day-to-day work and the people you work with?

Before my PhD I had very little experience in programming, however this is now one of my favourite parts of my work. It’s great to be in a community of people who do similar work, as we can bounce ideas off each other and get tips and tricks with code.

What do you value most about the MRC DTP studentship?

The amount of money available for training and development is great! (especially as a non-lab-based PhD). I am also excited to do my placement.

What additional training have you attended with MRC DTP money?

I have been on various training courses relevant to my PhD. These have been at LSHTM and other universities and institutes (e.g. Royal Statistical Society).

Where did you go on your placement? What did you do?

I have not yet been on my placement, but if all goes to plan I will be going to the Caribbean to help with data collection. This is specifically important to me as my PhD is all office based, so I need to get a better understanding of the realities of data collection.

Do you have any tips for future MRC DTP scholarship applicants?

Talk to your potential supervisors before applying / interview! It can help you make decisions about which project to do, but also ensure you know what you are talking about in the interview!
